FAQ

Questions Google Ads professionals ask before using WA Tracking. Still stuck? Email hello@watracking.com.

The Key Question
How is this different from tracking the WhatsApp button click in GTM?
Clicking a wa.me link does not mean someone messaged you. Most people click to see the number, then leave without sending a message.

GTM tracks the click. WA Tracking tracks the actual contact. Every click generates a unique ref code that gets prepended to the visitor's WhatsApp message. When someone messages you with that ref code, you confirm it in the dashboard and export only that lead to Google Ads.

Google Ads learns from real contacts, not button clicks.

Compatibility
Does it work with WhatsApp Business App? I'm not using the API. +

Yes. This is exactly what WA Tracking was built for.

WhatsApp Business App has no Conversions API and no Google Ads integration. WA Tracking works at the browser level by capturing data when the visitor clicks a wa.me link, before WhatsApp opens. No API subscription needed.

Which WhatsApp button types does it detect? +

All common implementations: wa.me links, api.whatsapp.com links, HT Chat / HT CTC Chat widget, Elementor WhatsApp button, and any element with a .whatsapp CSS class. If your setup is different, contact us.

What if the visitor browses multiple pages before clicking WhatsApp? +

Handled. The GCLID and keyword are saved to the visitor's browser when they first land. WA Tracking reads that data at the moment they click WhatsApp, regardless of which page they're on.

What if the visitor came from organic search, not Google Ads? +

The click is still logged, just without a GCLID or keyword. Useful for comparing paid vs organic WhatsApp volume. Only events with a GCLID appear in the Google Ads CSV export.

Can I track multiple WhatsApp numbers? +

Yes. WA Tracking captures whichever number is in the wa.me link that was clicked. Each number is logged separately in the dashboard. Filter by phone number in the CSV export.

Google Ads
How often do I need to upload the CSV to Google Ads? +

As often as you confirm leads, daily or weekly. Google Ads accepts offline conversions up to 90 days after the original click. For best Smart Bidding results, upload at least weekly.

How long before Smart Bidding improves? +

Smart Bidding needs roughly 30 to 50 conversions to exit the learning phase. Most agencies see meaningful improvement in CPL and lead quality within 6 to 8 weeks of consistent uploads.

Can I assign different values to different leads? +

The Google Ads CSV has a Conversion Value column. Currently WA Tracking leaves it blank (equal weight). You can manually edit the CSV before uploading to assign different values. Built-in value assignment is planned for a future update.

Setup and Privacy
How do I install it? Do I need a developer? +

No developer needed. Sign up, add your domain, copy your snippet from the dashboard, paste it into a GTM Custom HTML tag with an All Pages trigger, and publish. Under 5 minutes.

Will it break the WhatsApp button if something goes wrong? +

No. If anything fails, the snippet falls back and opens WhatsApp normally without the ref code. The click is never blocked. The button always works.

Is it privacy compliant? Do you store personal data? +

Yes. No IP addresses are ever stored. No personal information is collected. WA Tracking only logs click metadata: keyword, GCLID, campaign, page URL, timestamp, and a unique reference code. None of this identifies an individual person.

Can I track multiple client sites under one account? +

Yes. Starter covers 1 domain, Pro covers 3, Agency covers 10. Each domain gets its own snippet config and the events are separated by domain in the dashboard.
